Hey everyone, I’ve been thinking about starting my own local business here in BC, but I’m not sure where to begin. I used to run a small coffee cart a few years back, but it was more of a side project. This time I’m looking to make something more permanent. It’s just that the process seems a bit overwhelming, especially with all the competition from bigger chains. Has anyone here started their own local business recently? What’s the first step you took? Would love to hear some advice on how to stand out while staying true to the community.

Starting a local business in BC can be an exciting journey! First, identify a unique value that connects with your community. Research competitors and pinpoint any local gaps your business can fill. Since establishing a presence can be challenging, consider community involvement and digital promotion strategies. Partnering with a book publishing company or utilizing local authors could also give your business an edge if you want to include a bookstore or café with books. Best of luck building a local favorite!
I always admire people who take the leap and start something of their own. It’s not easy, but local businesses are such a vital part of the community. I think the best businesses are the ones that really listen to what their customers want and don’t try to do everything at once. Best of luck to anyone going down that path—it’s a big step!
That’s a great idea! Starting local can definitely be a challenge, but it’s super rewarding if you get it right. I actually helped my friend set up her bakery here in BC a couple of months ago. The biggest thing for us was finding a niche that people actually care about locally. We made sure to connect with other small businesses and support each other. Also, don’t underestimate the power of getting listed on directories like local businesses in BC. It really helps with visibility, especially for people searching specifically for local options. Just make sure your business feels like it belongs in the community and that you’re offering something unique!
